7-Year-Old Girl Dies After Pit Bull Attack: Authorities say a 7-year-old girl died Friday after a pit bull attacked her in East Baton Rouge, Louisiana. The owner of the dog has been caught.
The attack happened around 6:30 p.m. Friday, according to the East Baton Rouge Sheriff’s Office. The sheriff’s office said the girl was taken to the hospital, where she later died from her injuries. No one knew who she was right away.
A probable cause form obtained by CBS News says that the dog’s owner, 20-year-old Erick Lopez, was taken into custody on charges of negligent homicide. According to the probable cause form, the girl was playing outside a relative’s house when a neighbor’s dog “viciously attacked” her.
Investigators for the sheriff’s office said the relative tried to stop the attack by hitting the dog with a cane, but it didn’t work. East Baton Rouge Parish Animal Control officers took the pit bull into custody.
During an interview with investigators, Lopez said he wasn’t there when the attack happened. He also said that the dog was “unrestrained” and “often roamed the neighboring property,” which is where the attack occurred, according to the probable cause documents.
Officials said that there was no fence between the two properties. East Baton Rouge Sheriff Sid Gautreaux said, “This is a terrible, heartbreaking tragedy.” “This family breaks my heart, and I will continue to pray for them.”
